let's go to anne makovec in the tenderloin now where the fire, anne, i understand may not be totally out yet? good morning. a. >> reporter: it was out but there may be hot spots at taylor and eddy here on san francisco. firefighters getting to work making sure that everything is safe inside the building. you can't tell any damage from the outside but apparently significant damage on the inside. here's what it looks like last night. smoke poured from the roof after the fire broke out around 9 p.m. firefighters believe it started in a trash compactor on the ground floor and traveled up the garbage chute into the attic and through the roof. people had to be rescued from the fire escape. some just hunkered down in their apartments while firefighters got them out. about 100 people live in the hotel. the injured suffered from smoke inhalation. everybody is expected to be okay. after escaping, people stood on the street and watched. >> i heard people screaming get down, get out, get out of that building. then i panicked and i said, okay, ran, got my jacket, people were running down the stai

anne makovec reports. what are crews on the scene saying? >> reporter: it has been a very challenging night here in berkeley. i'm on dwight way and sacramento. fire crews had to deal with a downed power line and two gas meters that blew off the house creating a fireball to be careful of, as well. very challenging. one house is destroyed on dwight way. these are pictures from just after the fire started at 1 a.m. fire crews say when they got here, there was fire coming out of windows, the doors, the house was fully engulfed in flames. four people lived there. they all got out okay. but obviously, their home is gone. so that is not a good thing for them. they are being helped right now by the red cross. but when firefighters got here as well, there was a power line down. they had to avoid that. in fact, they had to divide and conquer going on either side of the house because they couldn't go near that power line. and then they had these two meters that had blown off -- actually, fire crews say that was a good thing because they could see where

let's go to anne makovec. she joins us now from pg&e's headquarters in san francisco with details. anne, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. a lot of pressure on pg&e executives to make safety a top priority and in fact, look at the sign here above their headquarters. they have talked about making it one of their main goals. but the question, what do you want to risk in convenience when it comes to safety? now, after what happened in san bruno last september state regulators have been considering a slew of new rules for pg&e's gas line. a few weeks ago the utility was ordered to produce records on all of its urban gas lines, records on roughly a third of those pipes are still missing this morning. so the state is proposing pg&e reduce pressure on its older lines like the one that blew up in san bruno. specifically, the lines that have records that are still missing. well, pg&e is warning this morning that 20% cut back in the so-called backbone type would have a lot of consequences for consumers. it would reduce the system's available gas according to pg&e by 67%. it could caus
